About Music Under Construction:

Music Under Construction (M.U.C.) is an organization dedicated to fostering the support and development of new and experimental music and dance. Founded in 1993 as a cooperative organization of member composers, M.U.C. offers its members and other invited composers and choreographers the opportunity of having new works performed by its resident professional chamber group--The Music Under Construction Chamber Soloists. M.U.C. also provides a new and growing audience with adventurous programs in a variety of styles. Composers are invited to experiment and to write for a wide range of instrumentation--from solo instruments to chamber orchestra, and are encouraged to collaborate and interact with a variety of art forms such as dance, opera, film & video. Since its inception M.U.C. has produced approximately 10 concerts each year to enthusiastic capacity audiences in its performance space at 10 East 18th Street in Manhattan. Special projects are produced at larger venues such as composer Carolyn Lord and choreographer Bryan Hayes' Rock Stream House at Dia Arts Foundation in Soho, and M.U.C. concerts at Mannes College of Music.

Music Under Construction is an offshoot of Construction Company Theater/Dance Associates, Inc. founded in 1972. From 1972-93 The Construction Company, an artistic cooperative, produced the works of numerous emerging experimental choreographers and also presented new theater, music and inter-media art. Carolyn Lord, founding member of The Construction Company and current Executive Director of M.U.C., is a noted dancer-choreographer who received an M.M. in Composition from Mannes College of Music in 1993. M.U.C. maintains its connection to dance and other arts and each year presents the series Music/Dance Collaborations, offering resident composers the opportunity to work closely with talented choreographers and giving choreographers the chance of having their work produced with original music in live performance. Since 1993 M.U.C. has produced 26 works of Music/Dance Collaboration. M.U.C. also provides low-cost rehearsal and performance space to dancers and choreographers.

Artistic interaction and exchange has been an important organizing principle of each M.U.C. season. In addition to performances by Music Under Construction Chamber Soloists, noted ensembles and composer/performers have been invited to perform new works by M.U.C. composers along with their own repertory. Past appearances have included the ensembles Broken Consort, The Manhattan Brass Quintet, and Talujon Percussion Quartet; past soloists include guitarist Sergio Puccini, Alonso Alexander and pianist Craig Nies. In April 1998, M.U.C. organized a cultural exchange with Belgian's new music group Niewe Oogst which performed at M.U.C. and Music Under Construction presented a program of new music and dance works in Belgium, July-August 1998.

Past themes explored in programming include: music by noted composer John Cage--Three Concerts (presented in 7/94 in conjunction with the Guggenheim Museum Soho); concerts devoted to the work of resident composer Chris Woltmann--Music and Multi-Media (combinations of music, dance, film, video, and text); and Music for Voice, two concerts devoted to songs and staged scenes from new opera.

Music Under Construction has received support from the New York State Council on the Arts, Meet the Composer, the American Composer's Forum Performance Incentive Fund, Con Edison, and Swiss Bank Corporation.
